Rafal Heydel-Mankoo

I was born and raised in London, England. My father, Anthony Mankoo, was the son of an industrial family. He moved to London in 1961. My mother, nee Baroness Maria Heydel, moved to London in 1968. They were married on March 7th 1970 in a Roman Catholic Rite at Ealing Abbey (Benedictine). I was Christened in the Abbey on July 17th 1976. My godparents were Baron Jan Heydel, Andrzej Laczynski and Elzbieta Laczynska.

In London my primary "stomping grounds" were Ealing and South Kensington. I received my primary education in London before emigrating to Ottawa, Canada. My secondary school education was completed in Canada. Receiving a full scholarship to attend the University of Ottawa I went on to complete a B.A. (Hons.) in history (magna cum laude). I was subsequently accepted in to the Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa (LL.B.). and graduated in 2001. I am currently completing a Master's degree (M.A.) in history at the University of Toronto and am a graduate resident at the University of St. Michael's College in the University of Toronto.

A brief biography of my mother can be found here.
Brief biographies of me can be found here and also here.

  1. The first of the abovementioned biographies about Mankoo retrieved from http://web.archive.org/web/20011208022850/http://www.interlog.com/~mineykok/info.html reads: "Rafal Heydel-Mankoo J.41

He was born on 1 June 1976 in London, England. He lived in England until 1988 when his parents and he moved to Ottawa. He went to the University of Ottawa, from where he graduated with B.A. honours in History. He was employed in the Treasury Board of Canada. Currently, he attends the Law School at the University of Ottawa (from September of 1999). He is the Chairman of the Monarchist League of Canada--Ottawa Branch. He is also a member of the International (Winston) Churchill Society and the Royal Stuart Society. He is the author of the soon to be published book: The Ancestry of Baroness Karolina Heydel, nee Princess Jablonowska. Volume one is now completed (300 pages) with at least one more volume to write. He has written articles about Sir Winston Churchill, the British royal family and Polish nobility. He helped facilitate the 22nd International Congress of Genealogical and Heraldic Sciences. He can be regarded as the official genealogist of the Jablonowski family. He has the passion for the Jablonowski family. He has acquired the largest private collection of Jablonowski-related items, in the world."

Actually, funny thing, co-authorship of World Orders of Knighthood and Merit he always demands and claims, while he does not extend the same courtesy to me here which was extended to me when the thing was composed as I taught him how to do it. It is cited correctly with credit to both of us elsewhere.

  2. The second of the abovementioned biographies about Mankoo retrieved from http://web.archive.org/web/20020209140500/http://www.winstonchurchill.org/fh109crosswin.htm reads: "Rafal Heydel-Mankoo was born and raised in London, England. Along with his parents he moved to Ottawa in 1988. He is currently in his final year at the Law School of the University of Ottawa. Rafal has been a member of ICS Canada since the age of 14. His article, "Glimpses: Count Xavier Puslowski," in Finest Hour 101, focused on the connections between his late uncle and Churchill. Rafal is also a member of a number of societies which are of interest to Churchillians: the English Speaking Union, Royal Commonwealth Society, Royal Stuart Society and the Heraldry Society of Canada. He is Ottawa Branch Chairman of the Monarchist League of Canada and appears not infrequently on Canadian television and radio to discuss and debate issues relating to the Crown. He is the author of "The Ancestry of Baroness Karolina Heydel, née HSH Princess Jablonowska." Aside from his passion for Churchill, Rafal is also very interested in the history of London; British and Polish aristocracy; the legitimacy of various honours and orders of chivalry; architecture; pre-1980s British comedy and popular music of the 1920s, '30s and '40s (especially Noel Coward and Al Jolson). He is also an avid collector of books and medals. A self-confessed Luddite, Rafal has recently discovered the wonders of the Internet and has designed his own website (www.geocities.com/rafalhm), complete with a Churchill section."

Same comment about co-authorship as mentioned in regard to the first bio.

  3. The abovementioned biography of Mankoo's mother retrieved from http://web.archive.org/web/20011208022850/http://www.interlog.com/~mineykok/info.html reads: "Maria Heydel I.26
Maria Melania is a baroness. She was born on 18 January 1947 in Poznan, Poland. She was educated at Nowy Sacz convent. She went to London in the 1960s. She married Anthony Mankoo on 7 March 1970. They had two children. The eldest, Nicholas died of meningitis at the age of one. Maria was an office credit-controller and a teacher in England. Upon moving to Canada she became an accredited court and immigration interpreter. She is employed as a Polish-English translator-interpreter in Ottawa, Canada."

RC-Z's comments: While her family were officially recognised as barons at one time, in 1947 when Mankoo's mother was born, Poland was a Communist state, and Maria Melania would not have enjoyed the title of baroness though she might have done so (and possibly still does) in some social circles. At any rate, this is a moot point, as, in the Polish nobility, once a woman marries it is customary for her to enjoy the rank of her husband and to forego any title if the person is not a noble. While her husband Kulwant once jokingly told be that he was descended from the Maharajahs of X (something or other starting in "M" and ending in "poor"), he claims no noble title (unless it be Singh, "Lion", reflecting the custom of the Sikh religion).

  7. PART 1--VANITY TITLES--"THERE ARE PRINCES AND PRINCES", PUBLISHED IN 1920 in Polish, 1928 in English and again in Historical Journal format in 2012.
Written by: Stephanie Landyn-Chrzanowska, (translated from Polish by A.J. & W. K. Sielinski)

THERE ARE PRINCES AND PRINCES, (1)Princes holding just the title through a long line of feudal Princes of the former Poish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, recognized or bestowed upon them to prevent open insurrection against a ruling foreign monarch; (2)Those recognized ages ago in the treaties between Poland and Lithuania known as Ksiaze, or during the reign of the Prussian, Russian or Austrian Monarchs, to secure the Princes neutrality or their cooperation (collaboration) in measures destined to despoil the Poles of Culture and their land.

It is true that during the Bosnian crisis of 1908, Polish restgoration was brought nearer when Galician Poles became the "Pets" of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, but only as long as war with England, Russia and France was likely. The Austrian Emperor Francis-Joseph, a genial man whose nephew, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, the Habsburg heir was murdered during a visit to Bosnia. PART 11 TO BE CONTINUED!

    1. VANITY TITLES-PART 11--Emperor Francis Joseph granted Patents with no stability, meaning or importance other than an ordinary sheet of writing paper. They were granted EN MASSE, July 30, 1905.to descendants of former Polish feudal Princes INCLUDING THOSE HAVING BEEN GIVEN EARLIER HABSBURG TITLES even if not of the original branch but as surviving untitled members of another brance of the same family giving them the doubtful and empty honor to style themselves "furest" and Durchlaucht-Serene Highness to gain their good will. The social standing of such a Prince by comparison were not as high as that of an English Squire. continued in Part3.

    2. VANITY TITLES--Part 3--Among the numerous members of POLISH-LITHUANIAN princely and ennobled "Magnates" descendants of former feudal Lords not of Royalty direct whose title of "Fuerst (not Prinz) with qualification of "Durchlaucht-Serene Highness" confirmed by the PARTITIONING POWERS, some Kniaz, in Russia, one instance "Ksiaze", Czetwertynski and recorded by some in Spain and elsewhere with questionable documentation from government officialdom and for money tendered in the form of registration fees. Princes Mirski-Russia, Radolin-Radolinski-Charlottenburg, Puzyna-Russia, Drucki-Lubecki-Prussia Reign, Poniatowski-Austria. On July 20, 1905, the Austrian Emperor Francis Joseph conferred by mass grant (Schoenbrunn, Vienna and Ischl, July 20, 1905) titles of "Durchlaucht" and "Fuerst", not Prinz on: Czartoryski, Radziwill, Sapieha-Rozanski, Poninski, Lobkowicz: Sanguszko-Lubartowicz; and Lubomirski. *(MR. MANKOO CLAIMS A LETTER PATENT FROM 1905 EMPEROR F.J. FOR HIS MATERNAL JABLONOWSKI GRANDMOTHER'S FAMILY. Mr. Mankoo cannot claim nobility from either parent from any country). I will continue with Part 4 to allow the reader to evaluate pompasity and vanity vs. the reality and social standing of a particular period in time and how foreign titles were viewed in Poland-Lithuania. When History is bent in present time and designed for a naieve audiance looking for a fantasy hoping to become a part of someone's long lost family glory, they become susceptible to abuse by those who represent their ancestrial heritage in a way not recognized in the Country that they claim to be the oragin of their Nationality.

    3. VANITY TITLES PART 4--Pilsudski, Moscicki and Daszynski, Title of Prince by the King of Afghanistan in 1928. They accepted it seems as officials of the "Republic". However, the enjoyment of their titles had not been of long duration since the "New York Times" in its printed newspaper of September 5, 1928 stated that his Majesty Amanullah Khan has on his return to the "Land of Rocks, Stones and Sanguinary Fueds" modernized his country on the model of Western Civilization and abolished all titles but his own. Hence the uprising which this caused against the Afghanistan King. Numerous members of the afore-mentioned families and those not listed have been born in Germany, France, Austria proper, Westphalia, Berlin, Dresden, Vienna, Paris, U.S.A, Canada, Africa, Australia, U.K.etc. The late Prince Radziwill, main shareholder in the company that runs the Casino, Monaco, was according to newspapers a French citizen, yet was charged with a mission by the Polish Government, which therefore has itself set a precedent of extreme importance for those who hold a foreign citizenship, and although born on foreign soil of parents also born abroad are of Polish descent be it only in name. Moscicki, the newspapers claim is a Swiss Citizen. Such titles as "Fuerst" fell with the overthrow of the Russian, Prussian, Saxon and Austrian Monarchs but may be restored or revived with a return to Monarchy.

    4. VANITY TITLES PART 5--Now that the Romanoffs, the Habsburgs and the Hohenzollern have fallen and since the Polish Republic Constitution recognizes no titles at all, their serene Highnesses will have to be addressed officially, and privately if one desires, as plain Mister Czatoryski, Mr. Radziwill, etc., bestowal of honors and appointments. Only "Monsieur" sounds so much nicer. May they, however remain quite serene for in days far removed. The French King's brother too was styled "Monsieur" and his wife "Madame". Or does the Polish Government shut their eyes to any infringement of the Constitution in that respect, thereby earning the good will of the Magnets. Descendants of many formerly Magnet families only carry the name and not the wealth or influence for centuries since the first notable person of the descendants surname. Pilsudski in his ancestry has noble and Princely blood from the Princes Polubinski. If that be so the restoration of a Monarchial regime, recognizing historical titles by courtesy, is a hundred times preferable indeed to what occured in the sham Republic that existed after the overthrow of the Manchu Dynisty in China. These few details superficially treated relating to the above individuals and others are not intended to constitute a sort of "Almanac de Gotha" or Whose Who in Nobility, nor must they be construed in any shape or form as an expression of criticism. It is intended to show various points of view from a historical and social perspective. It should also be pointed out that while the Polish Commonwealth existed titles were frowned upon due to the belief that all nobles were equal. Many families who had received foreign titles abstained from using them until the partition of Poland by Prussia, Austria-Hungary and Russia whose monarchs were the source of many of these titles. Now they were perceived as invaders and titles from these monarchies were viewed by many as traitors to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The perception was that they sold out the Commonwealth and were continuing to cooperate as "COLLABRATORS". In some instances individual members of noble and noble titled families keep the flame of an INDEPENDANT Polish-Lithunian Commonwealth alive and gave their fortunes and lives to push forward the removal of the invading usurpers. NOTE: Dupont de Nemours who come to America from France started the now worldwide Dupont Company. Today there are thousands of descendants from the original founder of the Dupont Fortune. Only a relative handful today have any wealth. One works as a small town Police Officer and others live and work middle class lives. The titles given by foreign monarchs meant nothing and would not have been given without collaboration in one way or another. During WWII Collaborators were across Europe aiding Hitler's Gernamy usurp the national sovereignty of European Nations. The collaborators were brought to trial and executed or incarcerated. Again, I would like to point out that these were individuals and did not necessaryly represent the activities or beliefs of their entire family.

    5. Harpal Rafal Sing Mankooat at birth now a/k/a Rafal Heydel-Mankoo (Legal Name?)--VANITY AND POMPASITY--Observations in researching the background of Mr. Mankoo, family history and maternal grandmother (nee Princess Jablonowska). While the information was most interestiing there was very little information regarding Mr. Mankoo's published credentials that were not authored by him or provided by him. The same approach is used in publicizing the history of the Jablonowski all written by him. It would appear that he is attempting to elevate himself socially through the maternal family history of which aparently he was not totally aware of and he and a collaborator researched. He become more adept in his self promotion by expanding upon his existing knowledge and inserting researched history as though it was always know to the "family". Much of what he has published was researched and published over the decades and centuries. There are only so many ways to reproduce what has been made available by the reserch of others time and time again. He does not appear to footnote sources which when comparing lists between previous researchers and Mr. Mankoo's work are very simular. There is no updating of new additional names to the list of Polish-Lithuanian nobility since the fall of the Eastern European Monarchies. Researching marriages one might claim as many times removed distant relative that your family have not known for generations and who might not recognise your surname. Both the Heydel and Jablonski Titles are foreign to Poland-Lithuania coming from Saxony and Austria. It should also be noted that there exists non titled branches of the Jablonowski family. Who is to say which branch (titled or untitled)received the Patent granted EN MASSE in 1905? The Emperor made it possible for untitled surviving branches to apply for recognition of a title granted by a Habsburg if the titled branch became extinct. Contempories who have followed Mr. Mankoo in his self promotion wonder why anyone who has no claim to nobility from either parent from any coutry has chosen to self promote himself as he chosen Arbitrator of Organizations, Nobility and Titles? Perhaps he believes his promoting the Jablonowski family and his maternal connection will make people think he is of the nobility. Yes, he portrays the Jablonowski connection as though they should be exaulted and sanctified! We hear much about the Jablonowski-Heydel maternal line but never anything regarding the Mankoo paternal line.
Jablonowskideaths are posted on the internet as though announcements from the Palace, pictures are posted of what appear to be very old, not particularly well to do people in apartment settings with Mr. Mankoo stating this is my aunt (great aunt) H.S.H Princess Jablonowska (marriend to Count P). This is Princess H.S.H. Sapehia etc. placing himself with ear to ear smile appearing in the middle of all photo's in what looks like a visit to a nursing home to chear up the residents. Always in front of the camera, seeking an audience, self promoting, and lacking Noblesse Oblige. Mr. Mankoo can only express his opinion which is full of pomposity to the naive public. It is a pity when anyone for the purpose of self promotion authors a resume full ov exaggerated credentials or untrue to build a career. Mr. Mankoo, acknowledge the heritage your were born with, that of your parents and be proud of the diverse cultures, religions and races you were born into.

  8. Mr. Mankoo's parents: Married March 7, 1970, gave birth to son Nicholas June 29, 1970. Nicholas died July 13, 1971. It is doubtful that Mr. Mankoo's allegiation that his parents were married in a Catholic Church in Great Britain. In 1970 a Catholic priest could not perform a Catholic marriage ceremony knowing the bride was several months pregnant and the groom was probably not Catholic.
